Happy holidays to all our incredible ECCLPs leaders!

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to each of you and sincerely thank you for your efforts and dedication throughout the year. Although many of us started as strangers with a common goal, we were able to unite across different opportunities to continue building relationships, connections, and advance the work alongside one another. Together is the only meaningful way forward and we're excited for what awaits us in 2024!

Your involvement has allowed for us to make significant progress in key areas of development including:

  • Co-hosting the California listening session with NOAA to convene major stakeholders to inform the next iteration of the national Climate Literacy Guide. We look forward to its release in early 2024 where the call for justice and equity could not be louder!
  • The ECCLPs UCI campus task force hosted a kick-off event to foster connections and conversations between faculty/staff members across all departments and local Orange County teachers.
  • Together with USGCRP and NOAA, we brought together researchers across all fields, PK-12 formal and nonformal educators, writers of the NCA5, and other leaders at AGU to discuss the importance of the Fifth National Climate Assessment (NCA5) as a comprehensive teaching tool while emphasizing the importance of education to catalyze the actions recommended.
  • The high school student survey results are in and we're excited to share the reports with everyone in January! Nearly 2200 results were collected nationally, with 2061 entries from California that were included in the analysis. We thank you all for your feedback and input on this important survey! Stay tuned for these incredibly insightful results that will shape our efforts moving forward.

Convening at UCOP with statewide leaders and the UNESCO Office for Climate Education

Here are a few of the projects and initiatives we look forward to next:

  • Bringing statewide stakeholders together at the first annual statewide forum symposium on May 3, 2024 from 9am-5pm PST online ! Save the date and please share our call for proposals widely. Event planning members across the committees will be sharing updates at the upcoming meeting and ways to support and potentially showcase your organization!
  • Beginning to connect and provide support across each of the UC and CSU teacher education programs informed by our cross-committee framework development project to outline clear principles and practices that support the paradigm shift needed in climate and environmental education based on committee discussions and the research. We ask working committee members to please contribute to this document no later than January 31, 2024 as your expertise is needed to help us map out key understandings across subject areas that will inform critical next steps and applications.
  • Many have called attention to the need to provide a central and credible space to house incredible resources and professional learning courses developed across our organizations. We intend to meet this request by co-designing and co-developing 1) a digital resource hub with SubjectToClimate that focuses on building teacher capacity and 2) an online learning hub with the eKadence Foundation based on the framework previously mentioned. We thank our generous partners for their in-kind services and support to help us achieve our goals!

Best,
