Dr. Shupeng Zhu

Shupeng Zhu, a researcher focused on air quality modeling and climate-related issues, shared insightful responses during an interview. Zhu's personal STEM journey started outdoors, observing the natural world, which sparked curiosity and eventually led to a passion for environmental science. Computer science and programming offered tools to create virtual models of the natural world, setting him on a path to study air quality modeling. Challenges in Zhu's journey included adapting to various cultures and environments, having studied in China, France, and the US. However, an inclusive attitude allowed him to navigate cultural differences and build meaningful connections. Zhu's current research projects focus on climate change solutions. He works on understanding the air quality benefits of decarbonization pathways in California and investigates the health impacts of wildfire smoke. His work directly informs climate action policies, providing hard data and tools for decision-making that benefit both the environment and public health. Regarding climate change, Zhu emphasizes the concept of interconnectivity, wherein actions in one part of the world can have significant impacts elsewhere. He believes that education is crucial for climate action, as it fosters awareness, promotes sustainable decision-making, and builds resilience in adapting to climate change. Zhu is both hopeful and concerned about the future. He finds hope in the growing awareness around environmental justice and the passion of the younger generation for climate issues. However, he worries about short-sighted development prioritizing immediate profit over long-term environmental sustainability. Zhu encourages teachers not to shy away from discussing climate change and sustainability in the classroom, as every subject has a place in this conversation. He urges students to recognize their power to make a difference and to challenge assumptions, emphasizing that small steps can lead to significant change.
