Haley Heesch
Haley Heesch, a field technician at the Center for Environmental Biology in the Ecology and Environmental Department at UC Irvine, shared her experiences and journey in the field of environmental biology. Growing up in Orange County, she developed a love for the outdoors, initially aspiring to pursue marine biology. However, during her undergraduate studies at UC Irvine, she discovered her passion for terrestrial environments and the importance of studying plant communities. Making the switch from marine biology to terrestrial ecology was a challenging decision, but Haley embraced it and fell in love with plants and their significance in ecosystem dynamics. She emphasized the importance of being open to change and following one's interests to find a fulfilling career path. Haley's current research projects involve studying plant community health and recovery after wildfires and drought in Orange County. She conducts transects to assess different plant communities and their responses to environmental changes, which helps inform land managers' best practices for restoration efforts. Regarding climate action and sustainability, Haley stressed the significance of education in spreading awareness about conservation and preservation. She highlighted the value of native plants and the role they play in maintaining healthy ecosystems. Haley expressed hope in the younger generation's awareness of climate change and the potential for fresh perspectives to drive positive change. Haley encouraged PK-12 teachers to incorporate local environmental knowledge into their science classes, fostering a deeper connection between students and their surroundings. She emphasized the importance of understanding regional ecosystems and the impact of climate change on local plant and wildlife communities. In conclusion, Haley's experiences and research contribute to climate change solutions, offering valuable insights into land management practices and ecosystem restoration. She urged students to stay curious, ask questions, and explore nature to gain a deeper appreciation for the environment and its significance in our lives.
